During the sentencing, Judge Kaplan criticized Bankman-Fried’s defense argument as misleading and logically flawed. He highlighted Bankman-Fried’s obstruction of justice and tampering with witnesses as factors considered in the sentencing decision.

Bankman-Fried, appearing in court wearing a beige jailhouse jumpsuit, expressed remorse and acknowledged his role in making “selfish” decisions while leading FTX. He admitted to regretting his actions and stated that the consequences haunt him every day.

However, Bankman-Fried also maintained that FTX had the capability to repay customers despite its collapse. Prosecutors countered, alleging that Bankman-Fried had deceived unsuspecting customers and orchestrated one of the largest financial frauds in US history, amounting to over $10 billion.

Before its bankruptcy in 2022, FTX was valued at $32 billion, and Bankman-Fried had cultivated a public persona that attracted celebrities, politicians, and business leaders. Prosecutors had initially sought a sentence of up to 50 years, while Bankman-Fried’s defense team argued for a maximum of six and a half years.

Bankman-Fried was convicted on seven criminal counts in November and has since been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
