Dangote Refinery In Trouble? NNPCL’s 48.6 Million Barrel Allocation Sparks Concern

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has allocated 48.6 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Petroleum Refinery over the last ten months, with 11.7 million barrels delivered in October 2024 alone. Despite this, sources within Dangote Refinery expressed concerns that the volume is still insufficient to meet the refinery’s full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. Further analysis indicates that Dangote Refinery may be receiving less than half of its potential crude supply, raising questions about Nigeria’s refinery optimization and crude oil management strategies.

The NNPCL has not disclosed detailed crude oil requirements for Nigerian refineries in the last quarter of 2024. However, the government previously estimated the total daily requirement at 597,700 barrels during the second quarter, a noticeable increase from the first half of the year. Given this data, concerns continue about the efficient allocation of crude oil to refineries like Dangote and the broader implications for Nigeria’s energy sector.

As Nigeria’s largest refinery, Dangote’s operations play a critical role in the country’s energy stability, and the gap between its capacity and the crude allocation raises significant discussions about the country’s crude management strategy. Ensuring an adequate supply for refining is crucial for addressing domestic fuel needs and reducing reliance on imported refined products.
