Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has urged the Nigerian Guild of Editors to champion responsible journalism that strengthens democracy and fosters national development, according to iReporter Online.

The governor made this appeal during a courtesy visit by members of the Guild to the New Exco Chambers at the Government House in Owerri on Thursday.

Emphasizing the powerful role of the media in shaping public perception and promoting good governance, Uzodimma encouraged editors to embrace developmental journalism—anchored on constructive criticism that fosters national unity, iReporter Online reports.

He expressed concern over the growing influence of social media, describing it as a double-edged sword that, if left unchecked, could spread falsehoods capable of damaging individuals and societal cohesion.

The governor therefore advocated for appropriate measures to regulate social media usage and curb its abuse.

Uzodimma reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the media sector, adding that a strong partnership between the press and government was essential for meaningful progress in Imo State and across Nigeria, according to iReporter Online.
