Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday after his motorcade came under attack during a public event in the central part of the country.

According to Ireporter Online, President Noboa was attending the inauguration of a water treatment facility when the convoy was suddenly assaulted by a violent crowd. The country’s Environment Minister, Ines Manzano, confirmed that the president’s vehicle bore visible bullet marks following the chaos.

“About 500 people appeared at the event and began throwing stones at him, and there are obviously bullet marks on the president’s car as well,” Manzano told reporters.

Despite the assault, Minister Manzano praised President Noboa’s composure, describing him as “firm, brave, and determined” to continue his official duties undeterred. She added that the president has refused to be intimidated, continuing his agenda as planned.

Government-released footage from inside the convoy revealed a scene of panic, as protesters draped in flags hurled rocks and bricks at the passing vehicles. In the video, a voice could be heard shouting, “Cover your head!” moments before projectiles struck one of the SUVs, shattering its windows.

The attack unfolded amid widespread unrest triggered by the government’s proposal to increase diesel prices. Authorities believe criminal cartels involved in the nation’s lucrative cocaine trade are exploiting the protests to destabilize the administration.
