The accused trio, identified as Thomas Olatokunbo, Dauda Ismail, and Bello Muhammed, residents of the Sabo area in Mokola, Ibadan, stand accused of hoarding foreign currencies and engaging in unauthorized selling practices at exorbitant rates, all without the requisite authorization.
Charged with conspiracy, unlawful acquisition of currency trading licenses, and defiance of presidential directives, the defendants vehemently pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.
Chief Magistrate M. Mudasiru, presiding over the case, granted bail to each accused individual in the sum of N1 million, requiring two sureties of equal value. The proceedings were adjourned until June 4, pending further legal deliberations.
According to Police Prosecutor Amos Adewale, the alleged offenses occurred on February 21 in the Sabo area of Mokola, Ibadan, where the defendants purportedly schemed to contravene established laws and directives, undermining the integrity of the financial system.
Adewale underscored the seriousness of the accusations, highlighting the defendants’ alleged actions as a direct affront to public order and security. The charges, ranging from deceitful acquisition of trading licenses to disobedience of lawful directives, carry significant legal weight and could result in severe penalties if proven guilty.
These developments mark a decisive step by the EFCC in curbing illicit financial activities, safeguarding the integrity of the nation’s currency systems, and upholding the rule of law. As the legal proceedings unfold, all eyes remain on the courts as justice seeks to prevail against financial malpractice and wrongdoing.
