Speaking in a candid interview with ireporteronline, Obasanjo dismissed the government’s claims that the refineries had resumed operations, urging that the truth will eventually be exposed. He echoed a Yoruba saying about the eventual consequences of lying about accomplishments, stressing that the reality would soon come to light.

The former president took aim at the leadership’s refusal to acknowledge the failures of NNPC, recalling a previous offer from billionaire Aliko Dangote in 2007, which was rejected by his successor. Dangote had proposed managing the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries through a public-private partnership, but the offer was declined by the government at the time.

Obasanjo expressed his belief in Dangote’s ability to run his private refinery in Lagos but questioned NNPC’s capability to manage the nation’s vital oil assets.
