A recent report by Nextier has revealed that more than 20,000 people lost their lives or sustained injuries due to violent incidents in Nigeria between 2020 and 2024. The report highlights the alarming rise in terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and communal clashes across the country.…..READ MORE
According to Nextier’s Violent Conflicts Database, Nigeria recorded 5,291 violent events during this period, with 43 terrorist attacks and 1,306 bandit-related assaults occurring in 2024 alone. The report, titled “Mutations of Terror and Conflict,” also links the nation’s security challenges to external factors, including conflicts in the Sahel region, illegal mining, and international political influences.
The findings indicate that the North West remains the most affected region, with over 11,002 reported kidnappings. Additionally, clashes between farmers and herders led to 2,347 deaths from 2020 to 2024, with the North Central region accounting for 90% of fatalities in 2024.
Experts warn that worsening security conditions could continue in 2025, urging the Nigerian government to enhance both military and non-military strategies. The report also highlights the rise of a new terrorist group, Lakurawa, and calls for a reassessment of government policies, including the potential release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, to prevent further escalation of separatist tensions.
As insecurity continues to threaten national stability, the report recommends urgent reforms in security operations, intelligence gathering, and policy implementation to curb the growing crisis.
