Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has recalled an alleged private conversation with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in which he claimed Makinde promised not to work against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to IReporter Online, Fayose made the disclosure during an appearance on TVC’s Politics Tonight while discussing the crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fayose said the conversation followed a promotional flyer he saw on television presenting Makinde as a potential presidential candidate.

According to the former governor, he forwarded the flyer to Makinde, who subsequently called him and dismissed those behind the campaign as individuals seeking financial gain.

Fayose alleged that Makinde told him that if he ever decided to contest the presidency, he would make the announcement himself. He further claimed that Makinde promised that he would not allow himself to be used as a Yoruba candidate against another Yoruba man, referring to Tinubu.

Fayose challenged Makinde to deny the account, insisting that he was certain about what transpired between them.

The former governor also blamed Makinde for some of the challenges confronting the PDP, attributing the party’s difficulties partly to what he described as political ambition.

Fayose reflected on the activities of the G-5 governors ahead of the 2023 presidential election, questioning why the group failed to produce a unified strategy during the election.

He argued that the political ambitions of some members of the group contributed to the difficulties that later emerged within the party.

Fayose also claimed that Makinde took control of the PDP structure in Ekiti State from him and handed it over to other political actors, prompting him to withdraw from what remained of the party structure.

He maintained that the developments within the PDP demonstrated the consequences of pursuing individual political interests at the expense of party unity.
