Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in UK Hospital

Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Sunday afternoon by his former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu.

According to the official announcement, Buhari died at a private medical clinic in London, United Kingdom. “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London,” Shehu’s statement read. “May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus.”

A retired Major General and former military ruler, Buhari first led Nigeria from January 1984 to August 1985 following a coup. Decades later, he returned to power as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023 after a historic win over then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

Before his democratic resurgence, Buhari served as Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund in 1994, appointed by the late General Sani Abacha. In that role, he oversaw critical infrastructure interventions across the country.

Buhari’s political journey was marked by perseverance; he contested the presidency in 2003, 2007, and 2011 before his eventual victory in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). His inauguration marked Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power from one civilian government to the opposition.

Throughout his career, Buhari was decorated with several national honors including the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), and a number of military medals such as the Defence Service Medal, National Service Medal, and the Forces Service Star. He also received international honors including the Global Seal of Integrity and the Congo Medal.
