From N67 to N1000: Yunusa Tanko Slams Tinubu’s Fuel Price Surge, Compares to Jonathan’s Policy
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, a key figure in the Labour Party, has sharply criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for the dramatic rise in fuel prices in Nigeria. On Tuesday, Tanko took to social media to highlight the surge, revealing that the price of petrol in the Northern region has now reached a staggering N1,000 per liter.
Tanko drew a pointed comparison with the past, recalling the actions of former President Goodluck Jonathan. In 2012, Jonathan’s government raised fuel prices from N67 to N97 per liter. However, by January 2015, the price was reduced to N87 per liter. Tanko used this comparison to underscore his view that the current administration’s approach to fuel pricing is far less favorable than its predecessors.
“Congratulations! The pump price of petroleum in the North is now N1,000 (2024). In 2012, Jonathan’s administration increased fuel price from N67 to N97 but reduced it to N87 in January 2015. A tale of two leaders. Nigeria we hail thee our Renewed National Anthem,” Tanko remarked in his social media post.
Tanko’s comments come amid growing discontent across Nigeria due to severe fuel shortages and soaring prices. The situation has exacerbated public frustration as many Nigerians struggle with the financial strain caused by the steep increase in fuel costs.
This criticism highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the Tinubu administration and reflects broader concerns about the economic impact of fuel price fluctuations on everyday Nigerians.
