Gang Warfare Erupts In Minna: Five Arrested After Teen’s Fatal Stabbing

Five suspects were apprehended by police as they tried to escape the scene.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday, noting that their patrol team responded promptly, but the assailants had already fled by the time they arrived.
Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s spokesperson, shared in a WhatsApp message to PUNCH Online: “On December 21, 2024, around 11:30 AM, members of rival gangs from the Gurgudu area of Maitumbi and Kwari-Berger engaged in a violent altercation, leading to the death of Saidu Udu, 15, from Gurgudu. Although a police patrol from the Maitumbi Division responded, the perpetrators escaped. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“In a follow-up operation in the vicinity, five suspects were apprehended and are currently under investigation. Efforts are ongoing to capture other fugitives.”
The clash reportedly involved over 50 gang members and arose from a dispute over the distribution of Christmas funds allegedly provided by an unknown benefactor.
Eyewitnesses described the scene, stating that the gang members, armed with knives, cutlasses, and daggers, resorted to violence, resulting in Udu being fatally stabbed in the abdomen.
Local resident Malik Nurudeen recounted, “These area boys often come to threaten us, but today, their numbers exceeded 50. At first, we thought they were united, but it quickly became clear they were two opposing groups arguing over the distribution of Christmas money from someone. They began threatening each other, and then one person was stabbed, causing chaos.”
Residents expressed concerns about the rising tide of gang violence in Minna, with frequent clashes leading to injuries, robberies, and fatalities.
Despite the police’s efforts to control the activities of the miscreants, known locally as Yan Daba (Area Boys), these criminal elements continue to instill fear in the community.
Many people have reportedly lost their lives or suffered serious injuries in encounters with these gangs, who often manage to evade capture and resume their illicit activities.
Police Commissioner Shawulu Danmamman had previously assured residents of comprehensive security measures during the festive period.
