In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Friday, Buhari lauded Gowon for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development. He remarked on Gowon’s foresight during his tenure, saying, “We recognize his invaluable contributions to our nation’s enduring unity and the progress that has stemmed from it.

“Today, we pay a respectful tribute to a distinguished statesman and soldier who embodied the qualities of an effective army commander.”

Buhari further emphasized that Nigerians across generations would always take pride in Gowon’s leadership and the brave officers he led during crucial times in the nation’s history.

“I pay homage to all those who served and sacrificed for the country. Gowon and his team will continue to inspire future generations and the nation for years to come,” Buhari stated.

In addition to praising Gowon’s bravery and dedication, Buhari acknowledged the former leader’s role in significant initiatives such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He also expressed gratitude for Gowon’s ongoing efforts toward national peace and unity, particularly through his initiative, ‘Nigeria Prays.’
