Gov Yusuf Meets Shekarau Behind Closed Doors – What’s Brewing

According to Ireporter Online, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau. The meeting comes as Kano State experiences political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Yusuf recently defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has drawn considerable attention. Shekarau, in a video shared on his verified WhatsApp platform, defended Yusuf’s decision, stating that the governor has the right to join any political party of his choice. He further emphasized that Yusuf’s defection cannot be considered a betrayal, recalling that similar actions had been taken by the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Rabiu Kwankwaso.

In explaining his political switch, Yusuf said he joined the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to strategically align Kano with the federal government and accelerate development initiatives. The governor made the remarks during the 2026 Grand Rally at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, where thousands of supporters gathered to welcome him into the APC. His position was also confirmed in a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa. Yusuf emphasized that Kano, as a politically and economically significant state, could not afford to remain disconnected from the center of national governance.

Meanwhile, another former governor of Kano and leader of the NNPP officially joined the ADC last Monday, receiving his party membership card at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano. The registration event attracted several prominent political figures, including David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun, highlighting the ongoing shifts in the state’s political landscape.
