During his visit to the affected areas on March 6, 2025, Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring lasting peace and security. As part of his measures, he announced plans to establish a police outpost to enhance law enforcement and prevent further violence.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the Governor emphasized that the safety of residents remains a top priority and assured that criminal activities would not go unpunished.

“These criminals invade farms to steal the hard-earned produce of innocent people. We will go after them and restore peace. No individual should be more powerful than an entire community—burning houses and taking lives just to steal farm produce is unacceptable. We will track them down and bring them to justice,” Governor Okpebholo stated.

He urged residents to remain calm and refrain from retaliatory actions, assuring them that the government is taking decisive steps to address the situation.

“I understand your pain, but I urge you to maintain peace. We have already deployed soldiers, and three additional Operation Rescue patrol vehicles are in place. Once I return to Benin, I will coordinate with the Commissioner of Police to fast-track the establishment of a police outpost for sustained security,” he added.

In a further move to foster peace, the Governor met with community leaders and residents of Gbelebe, an Ijaw settlement, urging unity and promising government intervention in their development.

“My priority as Governor is to restore peace and bring progress. Without security, development cannot thrive. These killings and conflicts must stop. This community lacks basic infrastructure like roads and electricity, yet crime persists. My administration is committed to gradually improving the situation,” he assured.

Local leaders recounted that the crisis began when farm thieves clashed with a newly formed vigilante group. They called on the government to intensify efforts in protecting lives and property.
