Governors’ Wives Urged to Support First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s Food Security Campaign
Nigeria’s first ladies, there has been a significant push for them to join the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in promoting subsistence farming. This initiative, aimed at boosting food security and encouraging self-sufficiency, has gained traction following a recent video of Senator Tinubu planting in a garden at Aso Rock.
Hon. Mufutau Egberongbe, a former member of the House of Representatives, has applauded Senator Tinubu’s efforts and highlighted the need for further encouragement from the wives of state governors. He emphasized that while not everyone needs a large farm, having small home gardens can make a substantial difference.
Egberongbe stated, “The First Lady’s initiative is a commendable step, but it should not be an isolated effort. We need to see every governor’s wife championing this cause, encouraging citizens to plant crops in their home gardens. This could drastically reduce our food expenses and promote healthier eating habits.”
The former legislator believes that if all governors’ wives embrace and advocate for subsistence farming, it could greatly enhance the country’s food security and self-reliance. “If the wives of governors and local government chairmen across Nigeria actively support and promote this idea, the impact could be profound,” he added.
Egberongbe also expressed optimism about President Tinubu’s recent agricultural policies, which he believes will help the nation progress. However, he emphasized the importance of immediate action through subsistence farming to improve food availability and environmental greening.
The call to action is clear: embracing small-scale home gardens could lead to significant benefits, including reduced food costs and better access to fresh produce. As Egberongbe advised, it’s crucial for protesters and citizens alike to engage in constructive dialogue and support these vital initiatives for a more food-secure Nigeria.
