According to reports, the gunmen launched a surprise attack on the soldiers and vigilantes who were on a peacekeeping mission in the troubled area. The victims were part of a joint effort to maintain peace and security in the community following previous attacks by militia groups.
Abdullahi Aliyu Tashas, the chairman of the Toto Local Government Area, confirmed the devastating attack and the casualty count to the press. He revealed that the soldiers were deployed to restore order in the wake of recent violence perpetrated by militia groups, only to fall victim to an ambush by the very same assailants.
Tashas described the assailants as members of the Bassa militia, linking them to previous attacks on nearby communities. He recounted how the soldiers, in the course of their patrol, were suddenly ambushed by the militia, resulting in the tragic loss of three soldiers and two vigilantes.
The bodies of the fallen soldiers were promptly recovered and handed over to military authorities for further procedures. The incident marks yet another grim chapter in the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.
This ambush comes on the heels of a similar attack just a week prior, where armed men claimed the lives of three individuals and caused extensive property damage in the Katakpa community. Additionally, reports indicate that the neighboring Okudud community was targeted by the same suspected militia group three weeks earlier, resulting in the death of seven individuals and widespread destruction.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of these senseless acts of violence, calls for increased security measures and decisive action against the perpetrators grow louder. The need for effective strategies to curb militia activities and restore peace in Nasarawa State has become more urgent than ever.
