The Alara, along with the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, fell victim to the assailants while returning from a meeting, highlighting the escalating security concerns in the region.
Oba Adebayo Fatoba shared the chilling details of the ambush, revealing that the community had sought police permission to address security issues stemming from herders attacking the area. As part of a security committee, the Alara and his colleagues volunteered to confront the challenges facing Yoruba land.
As they were en route to address the reported incidents, the monarchs were abruptly halted by gunmen, resulting in a life-threatening situation. Oba Fatoba recalled the terrifying moment when the attackers brandished guns, initiating an alarming confrontation.
The Alara managed a daring escape, using quick thinking to avoid being targeted. The attackers, wielding machetes and firearms, engaged the monarchs in a sudden and intense encounter. Oba Fatoba, while attempting to exit the vehicle, employed the door as a shield against the assailants’ blows.
“I was reading something on my phone when I suddenly felt that the driver slammed the brakes. As we looked up, we saw guns pointed at us,” Oba Fatoba recounted.
The harrowing incident left the Alara with visible injuries, emphasizing the severity of the attack. Despite the ordeal, the monarch clarified that claims of a supernatural escape were unfounded, attributing his survival to quick reflexes and divine intervention.
As gunshots echoed behind him, Oba Fatoba managed to reach a pre-established security post, where he sought refuge. The tragic fate of his colleagues underscores the dangerous reality faced by traditional rulers in the region.
Responding to the grim event, the Ekiti State Police Command reported the arrest of a suspect linked to the killings. Babusa Lede, the apprehended individual, has reportedly confessed to involvement in the attack that claimed the lives of the two traditional rulers.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Dare Ogundare, assured that efforts were underway to apprehend others connected to the incident. The arrest signifies a step toward justice as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the targeted attack on the Ekiti monarchs.
