Hospital Clash: Niqab Debate Ignites As UCH Staff Allegedly Refuse Admission To Newborn – Doctors Weigh In!
A fiery debate has erupted after Muslim News Nigeria accused University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan staff of refusing to admit a sick newborn due to the mother’s insistence on keeping her niqab on. The video shared by Muslim News Nigeria captures the tense encounter at the hospital…..READ MORE
In the footage, hospital medics, clad in scrubs, are seen explaining to the parents that entering the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) requires a change into hospital scrubs to prevent the spread of infections to the delicate preterm babies.
The father, however, remained adamant, insisting that hospital rules should have been communicated before payment.
Responses to the video were diverse, with one user expressing strong disapproval: “Wallahi, I will turn that place upside down. That’s a government facility, not a private one.”
Despite such reactions, several users emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of all babies in the NICU over individual preferences.
Medical professionals also weighed in, underscoring the necessity of maintaining strict hygiene protocols in the NICU. One doctor shared personal experiences, stating, “When I worked in the ICU as an intern, I didn’t go into the ICU with my work clothes; there were scrubs and shoes kept for everyone outside, and we changed into them.”
Highlighting the sensitivity of the NICU environment, another doctor criticized the notion of introducing non-sanitized items like niqabs, stating, “What sort of nonsense mentality is this fgs!!!”
Health Simplex, a health organization, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the stringent hygiene measures in place in intensive care units, especially for vulnerable newborns.
As the debate rages on, the clash between cultural practices and healthcare protocols takes center stage, sparking discussions about finding a balance that ensures both cultural sensitivity and the well-being of the hospital’s youngest patients
