Witnessed predominantly in the Sabon Bariki and Bukuru Low Cost areas of the Gyel District, the women, backed by young girls, children, vigilantes, and volunteers, embarked on a mission to rid their communities of what they perceive as harmful and potency-laden local alcoholic beverages.

Despite shop owners attempting to thwart the operation by locking up their establishments, the resolute women promised a return with even more stringent measures.

Reportedly sanctioned by community and traditional leaders, the women expressed particular concern about locally produced alcoholic drinks with perceived high concentrations of harmful chemicals.

“These drinks are turning our men into irresponsible people. The drinks are weakening them; taking away their strengths and making them useless,” voiced one of the women.

Highlighting the adverse impact on the community, another woman lamented, “Our youths don’t have the strength to do menial jobs or farm to fend for themselves again. They spend most of their time in these drinking places. Our husbands have also been weakened by the drinks, and they can no longer perform their conjugal duties in the night. Today, instead of having a man and a woman at home, we now have two women at home since our husbands cannot be called men any longer.”

In response, a youth expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the women’s efforts, suggesting that the real solution lies in empowering the youth through government intervention. He emphasized the need for opportunities and empowerment to redirect their focus away from such destructive habits.
