How African Films Are Attracting Global Attention

African cinema is increasingly commanding global attention as productions from the continent continue to secure prominent slots at major international film festivals, further cementing their place on the world stage.

According to Ireporter Online, Nigerian documentary Beyond the Rim – The Heart of D’Tigress and the Cameroonian feature film Lights Out have been officially selected for the 30th anniversary edition of the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), scheduled to hold in Miami Beach from May 27 to May 31, 2026.

Beyond the Rim – The Heart of D’Tigress, directed by Adesua Okosun, documents the remarkable journey of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, highlighting their rise from underdogs to becoming the first African team to reach an Olympic quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Lights Out, directed by Enah Johnscott and produced by Carista Asonganyi and Buh Melvin, features prominent actors including Wale Ojo, Shaffy Bello, and Syndy Emade. The film explores the emotional and psychological challenges of memory loss within African societies through a pan-African storytelling lens.

Festival organisers have announced that this year’s edition, themed “Homecoming,” will celebrate legacy while spotlighting emerging creative voices across the African diaspora. Speaking at the unveiling of the HBO Short Film Award Showcase finalists, NICE CROWD Founder and CEO Jeff Friday noted that the milestone edition reflects both continuity and renewal, emphasizing the festival’s commitment to nurturing new talent while honoring its legacy of impactful storytelling.

He added that the HBO Short Film Award Showcase has remained instrumental in launching the careers of emerging filmmakers, with this year’s selected finalists expected to continue that tradition through bold and compelling narratives.

In a related development, African cinema also recorded another major milestone as three films—Ben’Imana, Congo Boy, and La Más Dulce—were selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to run from May 12 to May 23, 2026, further highlighting the continent’s growing influence in global film culture.
