I Won’t Apologize If My Son Is Seen As Arrogant” — Burna Boy’s Mother Speaks Out
According to Ireporter Online, Bose Ogulu, mother and manager of Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy, has reacted to public perceptions describing her son as arrogant, stating that she is unbothered by labels attached to him.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Ogulu addressed criticisms surrounding Burna Boy’s personality and how the artiste’s brand is perceived by the public, noting that fame often attracts mixed opinions.
She explained that she does not concern herself with what people call her or her son, emphasizing that personal understanding of one’s value matters more than external judgments. According to her, confidence and self-awareness should not be mistaken for arrogance.
Ogulu further stated that standing firm in one’s knowledge and abilities is a form of self-respect rather than pride, adding that society often misinterprets confidence, especially when it comes from individuals who have had to overcome certain barriers.
She also highlighted that expectations placed on people based on factors such as skin color, nationality, and gender often influence how they are perceived and treated, but insisted that she does not subscribe to the idea of diminishing oneself to meet such expectations.
“I don’t mind honestly, I don’t mind at all. I mean any adjective they want to attach to you is ok. The thing is who are you? If knowing your worth and carrying himself as such is arrogant, then it is a good thing. And I can’t apologize for that. Because I think we were born into a world where we were expected to put our heads down,” she said.
“First is the color of your skin, the color of your passport, for me, my gender. So, I don’t understand the concept of that life. I understand that if I know something, I know it and I expect you to realise that I know it. And if you don’t realize that I know it, then, put me to the test,” she added.
