iReporterOnline Mourns the Passing of Tribune’s Abuja Bureau Chief, Dr. Leon Usigbe

The management and editorial team of iReporterOnline join the entire Nigerian media fraternity in mourning the painful loss of one of the nation’s most respected journalists, Dr. Leon Habby Usigbe, Abuja Bureau Chief and State House Correspondent of the Nigerian Tribune.

Dr. Usigbe, who passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2025, was not only a seasoned journalist but a man whose life reflected calmness, professionalism, and purpose. For decades, he was a familiar presence in Nigeria’s political reporting landscape, particularly within the Presidential Villa, where he covered successive administrations with quiet dignity and unimpeachable integrity.

A native of Edo State, Dr. Usigbe was revered for his sharp intellect, humility, and consistency. He was never one to chase clout or controversy. Instead, he let his work speak volumes—balancing journalistic inquiry with grace, and always upholding the ethics of the profession.

Beyond the pen and the press briefings, he was a devoted family man. Friends and colleagues often spoke about his unwavering dedication to his family, his mentorship to younger reporters, and his unmatched sense of responsibility. In an industry often marred by noise and haste, Dr. Usigbe remained a voice of reason—measured, refined, and deeply committed to the truth.

His death is a huge loss to the media, the State House Press Corps, and indeed the country at large. As tributes continue to pour in from all quarters, including from the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who described him as “a cerebral and patriotic journalist,” we at iReporterOnline stand in solidarity with the Nigerian Tribune, the Usigbe family, and all who were touched by his life and work.

In this moment of grief, we celebrate the remarkable legacy of Dr. Leon Usigbe—a journalist’s journalist, a gentleman of the press, and a steadfast chronicler of Nigerian democracy. His contributions will not be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and the entire Tribune family. May his gentle soul find eternal rest, and may those he left behind find strength in the lasting impact of his noble life.

Signed:
Management, iReporterOnline
