July 7: ‘Stay Away’ – Edo Govt Warns Black-Axe, Other Cult Groups (Full-Details)

The Edo State Government, under Governor Godwin Obaseki, has issued a stern warning against unlawful gatherings by cult groups in the state, particularly in light of the upcoming anniversary celebrations of the Aiye (Black Axe) group on July 7, 2024.

In a statement released on Saturday, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare, emphasized that the government is fully prepared to enforce the state’s anti-cultism laws with the support of law enforcement agencies.

“The State Government has alerted the Police and other security agencies to be vigilant and ready to apprehend and prosecute any group that flouts the anti-cultism laws,” Nehikhare stated.

He urged youths in the state to refrain from participating in any gatherings associated with cult activities, cautioning against the potential for violence and clashes between rival groups during and after the anniversary celebrations.

Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, Nehikhare reminded cult members of the legal consequences stipulated by the state’s anti-cultism legislation. He also called on parents and guardians to advise their children against involvement in such activities.

“As we approach July 7th, 2024, the State Government reiterates its commitment to maintaining peace and security across Edo State. Citizens are encouraged to continue with their lawful activities, assured that security agencies are on high alert to protect lives and properties,” Nehikhare concluded.

The government’s proactive stance underscores ongoing efforts to curb cult-related violence and uphold public safety in Edo State.
