JUST IN: APC Calls for Immediate Arrest of Edo Speaker Blessing Aigbebaku Over Electoral Violence

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Blessing Aigbebaku, in connection with a series of violent attacks against APC members and supporters.

On August 20, 2024, the APC raised alarm over Aigbebaku’s alleged plans to disrupt the September 21 Governorship Election, but no action has been taken by security agencies despite the serious nature of the allegations. The APC claims that Aigbebaku, known for his history of violence, is using his influence to incite attacks against party members in Owan West Local Government Area.

The situation escalated dramatically on August 31, 2024, when Kelvin Omon Odion, acting under Aigbebaku’s instruction, reportedly attacked the wife of the APC Ward 2 chairman, Mrs. Collins Amoni. During the assault, her headgear was burned, and her mobile phone was stolen. Following this, attackers targeted the home of David Iruedo, APC Ward 2 Organizing Secretary, resulting in severe violence. Iruedo’s infant was thrown against a wall, his wife was stripped naked, and his bar was vandalized. Iruedo and Enurance Aidokhai suffered significant injuries.

Witnesses have identified several individuals involved, including Tunde Akele, Kelvin Ojo Omon, Lucky Omon, and Lucy Unuigbe, who were allegedly transported to the scene by Aigbebaku’s vehicles.

The APC has called for the immediate arrest of Aigbebaku and all those involved in these attacks. The party remains committed to a peaceful electoral process but warns it will not hesitate to defend its members if necessary.
