Just In: Enugu State Governor Inaugurates 8th Traditional-Rulers Council, Emphasizes Security-Partnership

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has officially inaugurated the 8th Council of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, urging royal fathers to play a crucial role in ensuring the security of their communities through collaboration with the government at all levels.

During the inauguration ceremony held on Monday at the House of Chiefs Chamber of the Enugu State House of Assembly Complex, Governor Mbah emphasized that the responsibilities of traditional rulers extend beyond being custodians of culture and tradition. He highlighted their vital role in fostering peace, unity, and acting as the government’s representatives in their respective communities.

“We are also taking this opportunity to remind ourselves that beyond being the custodians of our tradition and culture, you are also the ears and eyes of the government in your various communities so that when we talk about security challenges we are having in communities, we expect to work with you in partnership to address those security challenges,” Governor Mbah stated.

Governor Mbah also encouraged the royal fathers to work closely with the government and their subjects, serving as agents of positive change. He stressed the importance of effective communication to ensure that the community members understand and appreciate the government’s policies and programs in areas such as education, infrastructure, healthcare, security, and overall wellbeing.

Highlighting some of the impactful projects being executed across the state, Governor Mbah mentioned the establishment of 260 smart green schools across the 260 electoral wards. This initiative aims to ensure that no child of learning age is denied quality education. Additionally, the state’s focus on youth training, skills acquisition, and human capacity building is intended to serve as significant tools against insecurity.

He noted that the successful implementation of these robust programs would be challenging if traditional rulers continue to live outside their communities, as they are essential to community development.

The State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Okey Ogbodo, congratulated the new council members and explained that their selection was based on fidelity, integrity, and commitment to the government’s development programs. The criteria for selection adhered to section 3(1) of the state traditional rulers law.

Reacting to the inauguration, the Chairman of the Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, the traditional ruler of Edem-Ani Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, assured the governor of the traditional rulers’ commitment to the administration’s vision. He praised Governor Mbah as an agent of positive change, noting the governor’s landmark achievements across communities, including the first state-financed project in his community’s history.

“The governor said he would provide water in Enugu within 180 days, and he made it happen. He talked about roads, you can see it happening everywhere. He talked about smart schools. I’m very honoured that, that was the first time my town received anything from the government,” Igwe Asadu disclosed.

The inauguration marks a significant step towards enhanced security and development in Enugu State, with traditional rulers poised to play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.
