JUST IN: FG Approves Mother Tongue As Compulsory Language Of Instruction In Primary Schools

The federal government has approved a new National Language Policy that makes mother tongue compulsory for public primary school students.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, made this disclosure Wednesday while briefing reporters on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.

While stating that the government recognizes that implementation will be difficult, the minister revealed that the mother tongue will be used exclusively for the first six years of education, before being combined with English Language from Junior Secondary School.

Even though the policy is now officially in effect, he believes it will not be fully implemented until the government develops instructional materials and qualified teachers are available.

According to Adamu, the mother tongue to be used in each school will be the dominant language spoken by the community in which it is located.

The minister stated that the government is willing to preserve cultures and their peculiar quirks, emphasizing how much has been lost due to the extinction of some local languages.

He assured Nigerians that all of the country’s 600 languages are equal and will be treated as such.
