[Just In] Jubilation in Kano as Supreme Court Ruling Favors Youth Celebrations
On Friday, jubilant crowds of youths flooded the major streets of the city to celebrate the Supreme Court’s judgment, affirming Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the duly elected governor of the state…..CONTINUE READING
These enthusiastic youths marched in groups throughout the metropolis, expressing their joy with solidarity songs, street dancing, and waving placards adorned with party insignia.
Observers noted that some exuberant youths showcased their excitement by performing stunts on motorcycles and cars, while others proudly brandished brooms, the symbol of the All Progressives Party (APC).
Hassan, one of the jubilant youths, emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision prevented a potential outbreak of violence. He stated, “The Supreme Court has saved Kano from violent reactions because, if the judgment had not favored Abba, the situation would have been different by now. But with what you are seeing now, there is relief all over. People are going about with their normal businesses.”
Marketplaces that were initially closed in the early hours of Friday, such as Rimi and Kantin Kwari markets, witnessed a reopening of shops and businesses as traders resumed their activities.
As of the time of this report, armed security personnel remained deployed at strategic locations, maintaining vigilance to ensure the maintenance of peace.
Enhanced security measures were evident along routes leading to the Government House, where thorough checks were conducted on individuals passing through.
The Supreme Court’s decision earlier in the day set aside the lower courts’ rulings that had nullified the Kano governor’s victory. The tribunal had invalidated 165,663 votes for Abba Yusuf, citing unstamped and unsigned ballot papers.
The appeal court upheld the tribunal’s decision, criticizing the lower court for not disqualifying the governor, citing improper sponsorship by the New Nigeria Peoples Party and a violation of constitutional provisions.
