arms in a deal facilitated by the state government and federal agencies.
The Kaduna Model for Peace
Governor Uba Sani’s administration established the Peace Dialogue Group to implement a comprehensive peace framework. This initiative includes disarmament, demobilization, rural development, and conflict resolution. The government has also outlawed vigilante groups like Yan Sa Kai to maintain neutrality and rebuild trust.
Challenges and Setbacks
While some bandit leaders, such as Boka and Yellow Jamboros, pledged to cease criminal activities, Boka was killed in a suspected security operation just 72 hours after the peace deal. This incident has strained the agreement, with other leaders threatening retaliation.
Bandit Leaders Speak
The bandits cited attacks on their families and livestock as reasons for their actions, demanding an end to security raids and the release of detained members. They expressed hope for lasting peace if their conditions are met.
Community Reactions
Villagers and community leaders are cautiously optimistic. Many have returned to their farms and homes for the first time in years, hoping for stability. However, security analysts urge the government to extend the peace initiative to neighboring states to prevent infiltration.
Military Operations and Statistics
Despite the peace efforts, the military reported eliminating over 10,000 terrorists in 2024. However, bandits have caused significant casualties, with over 600,000 Nigerians killed and 2.2 million kidnapped since May 2023.
Looking Ahead
The Kaduna government remains committed to pursuing peace while warning against further violence. Sustained efforts are expected to address the grievances of both the bandits and affected communities.
