Labour Unions Suspend-Strike At Nigerian Meteorological-Agency Following Negotiations

Several aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, had directed staff at the Nigeria Meteorology Agency to declare their intention to strike starting Monday, May 20, 2024.

The strike plan arose from the failure of management to address 45 months of minimum wage arrears and related adjustments for staff.

Regarding this matter, Nasiru Sani, NiMet’s Director of Human Resources, stated, “The issue of the unpaid 42-month consequential salary adjustment by the Federal Government predates the current NiMet management.” He further added, “Nevertheless, as a responsible management concerned about the well-being of its staff, we are in discussions with the unions and regularly update them on our engagements with government agencies to settle the arrears.”

Following NiMet’s discussions with the unions, the agency announced, “The labor unions at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have suspended the planned strike scheduled to commence on Monday, May 20th, 2024. This decision follows an agreement reached today, Sunday, May 19th, 2024, during a special session convened by the House Committee on Aviation and Technology.”
