Labour Will Ground States That Refuse to Pay N70,000 Minimum Wage – Osun NLC Chair
Decisive statement, the Osun State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Jacob Adekomi, declared that states refusing to implement the proposed N70,000 minimum wage would face severe industrial actions. Addressing a gathering of workers in Osogbo, Adekomi emphasized that the labor union would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all state governments comply with the new wage structure aimed at improving the standard of living for Nigerian workers.
“We Will Not Tolerate Injustice”
Speaking passionately, Adekomi stated, “We will not tolerate any form of injustice against workers. The proposed N70,000 minimum wage is not a luxury but a necessity for the survival of the Nigerian worker in these trying times. Any state government that refuses to comply will face a total shutdown of its activities.”
He further stressed that the NLC’s commitment to this cause is unwavering. “Our members have endured enough hardship due to the rising cost of living and inflation. It’s high time the government acknowledges their sacrifices by implementing this new wage structure. We are ready to ground any state that dares to ignore this directive,” Adekomi added.
Mixed Reactions from State Governments
The proposed N70,000 minimum wage has elicited mixed reactions from various state governments. While some governors have shown willingness to implement the new wage, others have expressed concerns about their financial capabilities to sustain it.
Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State, in a recent statement, expressed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare but highlighted the financial challenges. “We understand the plight of our workers and are committed to their well-being. However, we must also consider the financial sustainability of such an increment. We are currently reviewing our finances to find a feasible solution,” Oyetola said.
Support from Labour Leaders
Other labour leaders have voiced their support for Adekomi’s stance. Comrade Ayuba Wabba, the National President of the NLC, commended the Osun State chapter for their firm position. “The fight for a fair minimum wage is a collective struggle. We stand with the Osun State NLC in their demand for N70,000. It is a just demand that must be met across all states,” Wabba asserted.
Comrade Funmi Sessi, the Lagos State NLC Chairperson, also echoed similar sentiments, urging state governments to prioritize workers’ welfare. “Workers are the backbone of our economy. It is only fair that their hard work is rewarded with a livable wage. We support any action necessary to achieve this,” Sessi stated.
Workers’ Expectations
Many workers have expressed high hopes for the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage. Mr. Adeolu Oladimeji, a civil servant in Osun State, shared his optimism, “This new wage will significantly improve our living conditions. We are hopeful that the government will heed our call and make this a reality.”
Similarly, Mrs. Grace Ajayi, a school teacher, emphasized the impact of the proposed wage on her family. “The current wage is not enough to meet our basic needs. The N70,000 minimum wage will go a long way in providing for my family and improving our quality of life,” she said.
The push for the N70,000 minimum wage by the NLC is gaining momentum, with strong support from labor leaders and workers alike. As the negotiations continue, the determination of the NLC to ensure compliance remains resolute. The coming weeks will reveal how state governments respond to this crucial demand for better living standards for Nigerian workers.
