Lagos Assembly Turmoil: Lawmakers Storm Court To Settle Speaker Dispute

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have gathered at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja for the hearing of a case filed by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

The lawmakers, along with Princess Mojisola Meranda—who was initially appointed as Obasa’s replacement—are listed as respondents in the suit.

On March 3, 2025, Meranda stepped down, paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement. She cited her decision as a show of respect for the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.

At the previous hearing on February 20, 2025, Obasa was represented by senior lawyer Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), while Femi Falana (SAN), Muiz Banire (SAN), and other top lawyers represented the 34 lawmakers. Additional members of the Assembly were also represented by senior advocates Olu Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika (SAN).

Princess Meranda’s defense was led by senior legal expert Tayo Oyetibo (SAN).

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro had earlier ruled that all Lagos House of Assembly members must be included as parties in the case. The hearing continues today, March 7, with pending preliminary objections on the agenda.
