Lagos Rolls Out New Cybersecurity Guidelines To Boost Digital Safety

Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive set of cybersecurity guidelines aimed at strengthening digital safety across businesses, public institutions, and residents in the state.

According to Ireporter Online, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to position Lagos as a smart, secure, and globally competitive digital hub, as the state continues to expand its reputation as Africa’s fastest-growing technology ecosystem. With thousands of enterprises operating within its digital space, Lagos is increasingly exposed to cyber risks, raising concerns over data protection and online security.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) estimates that Nigeria suffers annual losses of over $500 million (about N250 billion) to cybercrime, a development that highlights the growing need for coordinated and robust cybersecurity measures nationwide.

The newly released guidelines, accessible via https://lagosstate.gov.ng/cybersecguide, provide structured and scalable cybersecurity best practices tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises, large corporations, as well as Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The framework is designed to support safer digital operations while improving overall resilience against cyber threats.

The document aligns with key national legislations and policies, including the Cybercrime Act (2024), the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023), and the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy (2021).

It further clarified that the guidelines are not regulatory mandates but practical tools intended to equip stakeholders with actionable, context-specific measures to enhance cybersecurity preparedness.
