The gathering, which initially began as a celebration by students who had attended the convocation ceremony on Saturday, reportedly continued into the night at a hotel in the town. However, the atmosphere took a dangerous turn in the early hours of Sunday when a disagreement between two students escalated into a physical confrontation.

The situation quickly degenerated into panic as confusion spread among attendees, prompting a rush towards the exits. The resulting stampede led to the deaths of three individuals, including two students whose identities have yet to be confirmed and a hotel staff member.

The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that an investigation has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a full probe into the matter.

Police spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, noted that preliminary findings indicate the altercation between the students triggered panic that ultimately led to the fatal stampede. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
