Magistrate Arrested For Alleged Bribery Involving Groceries And Microwave

In a shocking revelation, the senior magistrate of Murehwa Magistrates’ Court, Terence Mashaire, has been apprehended amid allegations of accepting a bribe to sway a trial verdict.

According to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), Mashaire stands accused of receiving a bribe consisting of groceries, stationery, and even a Defy Microwave from defendant Allen Bhaswi in September 2023. These purported gifts were offered to Mashaire in appreciation for what was perceived as a favorable ruling in Bhaswi’s case, which concluded in December 2023.

Further investigations by law enforcement officials led to the discovery of the stove at Mashaire’s residence, providing compelling evidence of the alleged bribery scheme.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has also raised concerns about the nature of the relationship between Mashaire and Bhaswi, citing communication between them before and after court sessions. Moreover, allegations suggest that Mashaire continued to advise Bhaswi on legal proceedings even after the conclusion of the case, including offering guidance on navigating an appeal filed by the NPAZ at the High Court.

Amid these grave allegations, Mashaire has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings. A bail ruling is scheduled for March 4, 2024.

This scandal has sparked widespread concerns about the integrity of the judiciary and the potential susceptibility of legal decisions to external influence. As investigations unfold, questions arise about the sanctity of justice and the imperative need to uphold the rule of law without succumbing to corrupt practices.
