Major Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Saturday, March 28, 2026
Nigeria’s political and socio-economic landscape witnessed significant developments on Saturday, March 28, 2026, as key events unfolded across the country, according to Ireporter Online.
In Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has formally stepped down from his role as deputy governor, a move confirmed by his media aide. The resignation follows recent impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust. Lawmakers had accused him of receiving substantial monthly kickbacks from local government councils, amounting to hundreds of millions of naira over several months.
Reacting to the development, the Kwankwasiyya Movement stated that Gwarzo’s decision to resign was taken in the interest of stability and effective governance. The group maintained that the former deputy governor’s action should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt, describing it instead as a demonstration of political maturity aimed at reducing tension within the state.
Meanwhile, political realignments continue to shape the landscape in Rivers State as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, hosted prominent members of the All Progressives Congress from Rivers at his Abuja residence. The meeting, which included top party figures and lawmakers, comes in the wake of recent zonal congress activities in the South-South region and signals ongoing strategic engagements among stakeholders.
In a separate development, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has refuted claims that he endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. Through his media office, Saraki described such reports as misleading, clarifying that his comments on power rotation were not an endorsement of any individual. He reiterated his stance on zoning, emphasizing that his position aligns with broader party principles rather than support for specific candidates.
Further highlighting internal dynamics within the opposition, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Wike paid a visit to Saraki, acknowledging his role in ongoing reconciliation efforts ahead of the party’s planned convention. The visit underscores efforts to resolve lingering divisions within the party.
However, the crisis within the PDP deepened as a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki approached the Supreme Court seeking to halt the convention backed by Wike’s camp. The legal move is part of an ongoing dispute over the legitimacy of previous party conventions, with courts already issuing rulings that have further complicated the situation.
On the security front, Bolaji Abdullahi of the African Democratic Congress criticized recent remarks by top security officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, over the use of conciliatory language toward repentant terrorists. He warned that such rhetoric could undermine the seriousness of the country’s fight against insecurity.
In another development, former Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission chairman Sam Amadi advised the South-East region to prioritize economic advancement over presidential ambitions, arguing that the region faces slim chances of clinching the presidency in upcoming election cycles.
In the entertainment space, social media personality Blessing CEO addressed public skepticism surrounding her health claims, stating that she would not release her medical records online. She explained that such documents require professional interpretation and reaffirmed her willingness to share them privately with appropriate authorities.
On the global sports scene, uncertainty surrounds the participation of Lionel Messi in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, disclosed that the final decision rests with the player, citing considerations around fitness and personal readiness as key factors.
