Man Dies By Suicide In UK Instead Of Being Deported Back To Nigeria? – Fact Emerge
A video that has been circulating on social media since late July 2023 is being shared with a claim that it depicts a man who died by suicide at a UK airport to avoid being deported back to Nigeria.
The video opens with people shouting on a balcony of a large building’s upper floor.
A man then seizes the balcony’s railing and propels himself over it, falling to a lower floor and hitting his head against the wall during the descent.
The sounds of people screaming are audible. The clip concludes with the motionless man on the ground as others rush to help.
The accompanying captions to the video suggest that the man ended his life within Heathrow airport to evade deportation to Nigeria, implying dissatisfaction with the system. Heathrow airport is situated in London, the United Kingdom’s capital.
The captions continue: “If there’s anytime to pray for our dear country it is now. Judiciary must save us from total collapse!”
The final statement might reference the ongoing legal challenges surrounding Nigeria’s February 2023 election, which was won by President Bola Tinubu.

The video and its assertions can be found on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, as well as on blogs. However, the video’s actual context reveals a different story.
The initial frame of the video was submitted to a Google reverse image search by Africa Check.
One of the outcomes was a Reddit discussion forum thread containing the same video. A comment within the thread linked to an article on the US-based news outlet 11 Alive, dated 1 March 2018 – over five years before the video’s recent circulation.
The article’s headline reads, “Man charged after drunken jump from upper floor at Hartsfield-Jackson,” referring to an international airport in Atlanta, Georgia.
The same video is embedded in this article, recounting an incident where an intoxicated and visibly agitated man threatened passengers before jumping from an upper-level railing.
Fortunately, he survived the fall but sustained severe injuries. He was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct and intoxication.
This video, capturing a 2018 event in the US, does not portray a man in a UK airport in 2023 facing deportation back to Nigeria.
