Meranda’s Fall Imminent: Insider Confirms Obasa’s Return As Speaker In Lagos

The uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly intensified on Monday as the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) convened a crucial meeting with lawmakers to address the ongoing political turmoil.

The emergency session, which began at approximately 11 a.m., aimed to resolve the dispute stemming from the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025, while he was on an official visit to the United States.

In his absence, Mojisola Meranda, a representative from Apapa, was installed as Speaker last week. However, Obasa has refused to vacate his position, insisting that his removal was illegitimate. Notably, Meranda has yet to occupy the Speaker’s official residence, signaling lingering tensions.

Over the weekend, reports surfaced suggesting that President Bola Tinubu had allegedly ordered Obasa’s reinstatement, further fueling speculation about a potential reversal of the impeachment.

High-Stakes GAC Meeting Holds the Key to Leadership Resolution

ireporteronlinehas learned that the GAC— the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos—summoned all Assembly members to Lagos House, Marina, for a closed-door meeting aimed at brokering peace.

Sources indicate that the deliberations, which stretched late into the night, prevented the House from holding its usual plenary session on Monday.

While supporters of Mojisola Meranda claim that the GAC ruled in her favor, insider reports suggest that Obasa is on the verge of reclaiming his seat as Speaker.

Did the Impeachment Follow Due Process?

One of the key points debated during the meeting was the legality of Obasa’s removal. According to sources, lawmakers used a different mace—rather than the officially recognized one—to conduct the impeachment, raising questions about its legitimacy.

A highly placed insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, hinted at the likely outcome of the power struggle:

“From the look of things, Meranda is a goner.”

A final decision is expected today (Tuesday, February 4, 2025), as political maneuvering within the Lagos Assembly reaches a critical juncture.
