Mutfwang, Abba Yusuf Poised To Join APC As Party Eyes 30 Governors

According to Ireporter Online, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to expand its control of state governments as Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, are expected to formally join the party this week.

The anticipated defections are part of a broader political realignment that has seen the APC intensify efforts to consolidate its dominance across the states ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party sources disclosed that Governor Mutfwang is scheduled to be officially received by the APC national leadership on Tuesday, a development expected to put an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his political future.

With the expected entry of the two governors, the APC’s tally of state executives would rise to 30 out of the 36 governors nationwide, representing a significant boost for the party’s political standing. Insiders within the party described the move as a calculated strategy aimed at strengthening Plateau State’s access to federal infrastructure projects, enhanced security collaboration, and broader development initiatives.

Similarly, reports indicate that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, will complete his return to the APC on Monday, January 26, shortly after his exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). His spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the development, noting that the formal defection would take place in Kano.

Governor Yusuf, who has previously been associated with the APC, contested for a Senate seat on the party’s platform in 2014 before stepping down for Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He later switched parties and most recently won the Kano governorship election under the NNPP.

Explaining his decision to rejoin the APC, Yusuf stated that prevailing governance realities and the need to align with national development priorities influenced his move. He added that returning to the ruling party would strengthen Kano State’s relationship with the Federal Government, improve access to critical infrastructure, enhance security cooperation, and deepen service delivery for residents of the state.
