NCC Announces Change To Fixed Lines Numbering Format (DETAILS)
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a new numbering format for fixed lines, in line with its obligations under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 for managing numbering resources. Consequently, the Fixed-Lines Numbering Format has transitioned from eight to ten digits, achieved by adding the prefix “02” before the existing fixed number.
As stated in a press release signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, both the old and new number formats will operate concurrently until the transition period ends on December 31, 2023. Starting from January 1, 2024, the new numbering format, beginning with the “02” prefix, will be in full operation.

For instance, to dial the previously existing number, 09461700, you will now dial 02094617000. The current number formats for cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano (e.g., 014630643, 094630643, 084460643, and 064460643) will be transformed to 02014630643, 02094630643, 02084460643, and 02064460643, respectively, in the new numbering format.
It’s important to note that this change exclusively impacts Fixed Telephone Numbers, and there will be no alteration to the existing mobile numbering format.
This announcement aligns with a fundamental responsibility of the NCC and is in harmony with the practices established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency overseeing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
