Ndume Backs Tinubu, Slams VIPs Whose Wives And Children ‘Command’ Police Escorts
According to Ireporter Online, Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police escorts from Very Important Persons across the country. Speaking during an appearance on a national television programme, Ndume criticized the long-standing practice in which ministers, lawmakers, and other top officials not only receive police protection but also extend such privileges to their spouses and children.
Ndume described the development as unnecessary and questioned why the families of political officeholders should have police officers assigned to them. The lawmaker noted that he had consistently advocated for this reform, calling it one of the most impactful decisions made under the current administration. He emphasized that the policy must be enforced thoroughly to achieve its intended purpose.
He revealed that, in the past, he was allotted three police officers as escorts but declined the arrangement, insisting that only an orderly was necessary. Ndume explained that his preference for a single officer stemmed from a desire for proper supervision due to an ongoing legal matter, stressing that the role of the officer attached to him was monitoring, not protection.
While reiterating his approval of the escort withdrawal policy, he expressed disappointment that a significant number of police personnel were still visible within the National Assembly complex despite the directive. Ndume argued that the large number of police officers serving VIPs is unjustifiable and should be reassigned to duties that directly enhance national security. He concluded by describing it as “disturbing” that some ministers continue to have police escorts assigned to their wives and children.
