NiDCOM Announces Breakthrough As Nigerian Girls Detained In Mauritius Regain Freedom

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of Nigerian girls who were reportedly detained in Mauritius, announcing that they are now on their way back home.

According to NiDCOM, the release followed several days of diplomatic engagements between Nigerian authorities and officials in Mauritius after a viral video showing the girls allegedly being held at the Mauritius airport sparked public concern.

The commission disclosed that the girls were safely released in Nairobi, Kenya, where arrangements were made for their onward journey to Nigeria.

In a statement by its Digital Media Unit, NiDCOM said the development had brought relief to the families of the affected Nigerians, adding that the Nigerian Embassy in Mauritius played a key role in resolving the matter.

The commission stated that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, maintained constant communication with relevant authorities throughout the process to ensure the safe release of the girls.

NiDCOM explained that diplomatic channels were activated after reports emerged that the Nigerians had been stranded at the airport since July 31, leading to widespread calls for government intervention.

The commission further revealed that discussions were ongoing with Mauritian authorities to address the circumstances surrounding the detention and ensure accountability while preventing a recurrence of similar incidents.

It reassured Nigerians in the diaspora that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting citizens abroad and providing necessary support whenever they encounter challenges in foreign countries.

The release of the girls comes after days of public attention and concerns from Nigerians who demanded swift action to safeguard the welfare of citizens facing difficulties outside the country.
