Nigerian Doctors Are Preparing To Embark On A Nationwide Strike Starting This Thursday

With the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum looming on July 23, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a stern warning of an imminent nationwide shutdown of medical services if the Federal Government fails to act decisively

In an exclusive interview, NMA President, Professor Bala Audu, revealed that the association is fully prepared to embark on industrial action, insisting that their demands are vital to safeguarding Nigeria’s ailing healthcare system and protecting the welfare of medical professionals. The ultimatum, ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, was triggered by a controversial circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which unilaterally adjusted allowances for medical and dental officers, violating prior agreements with the NMA.

Professor Audu criticized the circular as both “obnoxious” and unacceptable, emphasizing that any change in policy affecting doctors must be a product of mutual consultation, not imposition. “We’ve made our position clear: if by July 23 the government hasn’t addressed our concerns, we may have no choice but to strike,” he said.

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, recent meetings between the NMA and key government officials—including the Coordinating Minister of Health, the Minister of State for Health, and representatives from the Labour and Finance ministries—have yet to produce concrete resolutions.

Meanwhile, the Katsina State chapter of the NMA has echoed national concerns, condemning the controversial circular and warning that uninterrupted healthcare delivery can no longer be guaranteed without swift government intervention.
