In a decisive move to curb cultism and related violence, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has banned the activities of Okaigheles (Youth Leaders) in the Edo South Senatorial District. This action is part of a broader strategy to combat cult-related activities and enhance security across the state.

During a press briefing at the Government House in Benin City, Governor Obaseki revealed this measure following a closed-door meeting with the state’s security chiefs. Expressing grave concern over the alarming number of deaths attributed to cult-related activities and homicides since January 2024, the governor emphasized the urgent need for action.

“We have lost over 150 people to cult-related activities and homicides from January to date. This situation is intolerable,” Obaseki stated. To address this crisis, the government has launched a full-scale offensive against cultism, including the enactment of a stringent anti-cultism law.

A special task force, headed by the Director of the Department of State Security (DSS), has been established to oversee this initiative. Starting immediately, this task force will meticulously investigate all incidents related to cultism, aiming to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

“The State has declared full war on cultists and Okaigeles in Edo State,” Obaseki declared. He further warned that anyone claiming to be an Okaigele and operating in any community would face strict legal action.

Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Funsho Adegboye, affirmed the security agencies’ commitment to enforcing the directives of the State Security Council. He highlighted the new anti-cultism law’s severe penalties and assured the public of unbiased implementation.

“The time for free bail for cultists is over. We are confident that this law will change the attitude of cultists,” Adegboye said.

Governor Obaseki reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of Edo State’s residents. He called on the community to support these efforts, emphasizing that the state’s rich mineral resources must benefit the people and not be overshadowed by criminal activities.

By implementing these measures, the Edo State government aims to restore peace and security, ensuring that citizens can live without fear of cult-related violence.
