The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is closely monitoring former President Goodluck Jonathan’s political moves amid speculation about a potential bid for the 2027 presidential election. Jonathan has yet to declare his intentions, but insiders suggest his entry could significantly alter the political equation, particularly if he partners with a prominent running mate such as former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Speaking to reporters, a party source claimed Jonathan holds a unique influence capable of dissuading former presidential candidate Peter Obi from entering the race. The source added that Jonathan enjoys broad acceptance in both the South-East and South-South, positioning him as a unifying figure within the opposition.

Analysts believe a Jonathan–Kwankwaso ticket could bridge regional divides, appealing to voters across the North and South while drawing support from PDP loyalists and other opposition bases.

In a related observation, a senior PDP figure highlighted what he described as the northern political bloc’s long-standing strategic edge in Nigerian elections. He noted that holding polls on Saturdays enables key northern political leaders to convene decision-making meetings on Fridays, ensuring they enter elections with coordinated strategies — an advantage he said has helped sustain their influence for years.
