The recent political crisis engineered by Governor Godwin Obaseki has escalated to a dangerous level, threatening not only the peace and stability of our beloved Edo State but also the integrity of our democratic process. The incident at the Benin Airport, where the life of Senator Monday Okpebholo was targeted in an assassination attempt, is a glaring example of the lengths to which political actors are willing to go to achieve their selfish aims. Tragically, this attack resulted in the death of Senator Okpebholo’s police aide, a stark reminder of the human cost of political violence.

Eyewitness accounts and credible reports indicate that individuals known to be party agents of Governor Obaseki were actively involved in this heinous act. Such actions, Your Excellency, are not just criminal but are an affront to the principles of democracy and the rule of law. A sitting governor sponsoring political violence to impose his preferred candidate, Asue Ighodalo, on the people of Edo State is not only a gross abuse of power but a dangerous precedent that must be condemned and curtailed.

The upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State should be a celebration of democracy, where the will of the people is respected and upheld. Instead, it is becoming a battlefield where might is attempting to make right. The electorate is being coerced and intimidated, undermining their fundamental right to freely choose their leaders.
