Open Letter To President Tinubu: Obaseki’s Reign Of Terror And The Urgent Need For Intervention In Edo State

Your Excellency,

I trust this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I write to you today with a heavy heart and a profound sense of duty as a concerned Nigerian, compelled to bring to your esteemed attention the recent troubling events in Edo State.

Edo State, known for its rich cultural heritage and its citizens’ unwavering commitment to democracy, is now at a critical juncture. The peaceful and resilient people of this great state have long been the bedrock of Nigeria’s socio-political landscape. They have always strived to uphold the values of justice, fairness, and progress. It is in this spirit of respect for the democratic process that I address this urgent matter to you.

The recent political crisis engineered by Governor Godwin Obaseki has escalated to a dangerous level, threatening not only the peace and stability of our beloved Edo State but also the integrity of our democratic process. The incident at the Benin Airport, where the life of Senator Monday Okpebholo was targeted in an assassination attempt, is a glaring example of the lengths to which political actors are willing to go to achieve their selfish aims. Tragically, this attack resulted in the death of Senator Okpebholo’s police aide, a stark reminder of the human cost of political violence.

Eyewitness accounts and credible reports indicate that individuals known to be party agents of Governor Obaseki were actively involved in this heinous act. Such actions, Your Excellency, are not just criminal but are an affront to the principles of democracy and the rule of law. A sitting governor sponsoring political violence to impose his preferred candidate, Asue Ighodalo, on the people of Edo State is not only a gross abuse of power but a dangerous precedent that must be condemned and curtailed.

The upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State should be a celebration of democracy, where the will of the people is respected and upheld. Instead, it is becoming a battlefield where might is attempting to make right. The electorate is being coerced and intimidated, undermining their fundamental right to freely choose their leaders.

Senator Monday Okpebholo has consistently demonstrated his commitment to law and order. His unwavering support for your renewed hope agenda is a testament to his dedication to the progress and prosperity of not only Edo State but the entire nation. His law-abiding nature and genuine concern for the people make him a candidate who embodies the values and aspirations that we all hold dear.

Your Excellency, as the leader of our great nation, your intervention is crucial at this juncture. We implore you to use your good offices to ensure that Governor Obaseki is cautioned and held accountable for his actions. The security agencies must be directed to investigate this matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice. Furthermore, measures should be put in place to guarantee the safety of all candidates and their supporters, ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.

The people of Edo State look to you for leadership and protection in these trying times. They need reassurance that their voices will be heard and that their votes will count. We trust that you will rise to this occasion and take the necessary steps to restore peace and order in Edo State.

Thank you, Your Excellency, for your attention to this urgent matter. We remain hopeful that your timely intervention will avert further escalation of violence and set a positive example for the entire nation.

Yours faithfully,
