Osifo explained that the minimum wage harmonization committee, in collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress, arrived at the figure of N615,000 after taking various factors into account. He stressed that this proposal was not made haphazardly but rather with thorough consideration of what is fair, just, and reasonable.
Highlighting the essence of negotiation, Osifo clarified that presenting the N615,000 figure was not a final stance but rather a starting point for discussions. He expressed readiness to engage in negotiations once the Nigerian federal government presents its counteroffer.
The call for a higher minimum wage comes at a time when Nigeria commemorates International Workers’ Day amidst economic challenges, including high inflation rates reaching 33.22% in March. Despite these economic hardships, the minimum wage in the country remains unchanged at N30,000.
