PDP Candidate Shot In Abuja, Battling For Life After Assassination Attempt
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reeling from shock following a brazen assassination attempt on its Anambra governorship candidate, Jude Ezenwafor, who is now battling for his life at a private medical facility in Abuja. The attack reportedly occurred on Friday night in the Federal Capital Territory, where armed assailants opened fire on Ezenwafor in a targeted operation that left him critically wounded.
ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, conflicting reports began to circulate over the weekend, suggesting that Ezenwafor had died from the injuries sustained during the ambush. However, close sources later confirmed that he remains alive but in critical condition, receiving urgent treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has acknowledged the incident and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that while preliminary findings are underway, the full details of the attack remain unclear as of now.
The PDP has responded with outrage, describing the attack as a direct consequence of the nation’s collapsing security infrastructure. In a strongly worded statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP accused desperate political actors of masterminding the attack due to Ezenwafor’s surging popularity ahead of the November 2025 governorship election.
The party further described the assassination attempt as a glaring indictment of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which it characterized as corrupt, indifferent, and dangerously rudderless. The PDP warned that unless immediate action is taken, political violence may escalate as the election draws near.
Calling on the Inspector General of Police, the PDP demanded the swift arrest and prosecution of both the attackers and their sponsors. The party also urged for heightened security around Ezenwafor, insisting that no effort should be spared in ensuring his safety and political participation.
ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, the shooting has intensified calls for election security reform and accountability within Nigeria’s political landscape. The PDP emphasized that attempts to silence its candidate would not succeed and vowed to continue its campaign against intimidation, violence, and impunity.
The party reiterated its commitment to the Anambra people and assured the electorate that justice will be pursued relentlessly, even as Ezenwafor fights for survival.
