PDP Governors Warn Tinubu: Palliatives Won’t Fix Nigeria’s Deep Issues

Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have voiced their dissatisfaction with the federal government’s approach to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges. In a recent communiqué issued after a meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, the PDP governors criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what they perceive as inadequate and counterproductive interventions.

The federal government has been distributing palliatives to states in an effort to alleviate economic hardship. However, the PDP governors argue that these measures are insufficient and that their public promotion is creating a misleading impression of the effectiveness of state governments.

“The Forum regrets that instead of revisiting macro-economic and social policies to make them more humane, the federal government has resorted to blackmail,” the communiqué stated. The governors urged President Tinubu to direct his officials to avoid framing the limited federal interventions in a manner that casts the states in a negative light.

The communiqué emphasized the need for a more substantial policy shift to address Nigeria’s underlying problems, rather than superficial palliatives that do not address the core issues. The governors reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nigerians and taking all necessary actions to alleviate their suffering.

The PDP governors also expressed concerns about the upcoming governorship election in Edo State. They alleged attempts to manipulate the election in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and claimed that security forces are intimidating PDP supporters.

In addition, the governors called for a fair and timely trial for those detained during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. They praised the peaceful conclusion of the protests and commended PDP governors for managing the situation with maturity, preventing the disruption of the protests by disruptive elements.

“The Forum extends its condolences to the families of the innocent lives lost and urges the federal government to ensure a fair and prompt trial for those arrested,” the communiqué concluded. The PDP governors reaffirmed their stance that peaceful protests are a fundamental right of citizens to express their grievances.

This call for a more robust and honest approach to governance highlights the ongoing tensions between state and federal authorities as Nigeria navigates its current economic and political challenges.
