Peter Obi Exposes Rot: ‘Political Class Destroyed Nigeria’s Future

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has attributed Nigeria’s widespread failures across various sectors to poor political leadership.

Speaking at Johns Hopkins University in the United States on Thursday, during a lecture titled “Politics and Change in Nigeria,” Obi emphasized that only political leaders who are competent, capable, and compassionate, and who possess integrity, can steer Nigeria towards meaningful development.

“The downfall of any nation is primarily rooted in its political leadership,” Obi stated. “Sustainable growth and development are only possible when a country is led by leaders with competence, capacity, and compassion.”

Obi compared Nigeria’s trajectory with that of China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, countries that were on similar footing with Nigeria in 1990 according to the Human Development Index (HDI). While those nations have since advanced to the high HDI category, Nigeria has dropped to the low category.

He pointed out that in 1990, Nigeria had a higher GDP per capita than China and Vietnam. Yet, 35 years later, Nigeria lags far behind, with a GDP per capita significantly lower than those nations.

“In 1990, Nigeria’s GDP per capita was $556, while China had $317, Indonesia $578, and Vietnam only $99. Today, Nigeria’s figure is just a fraction of those countries’, with China at $13,000, Indonesia at $5,000, and Vietnam at $4,400,” he said.

Obi also highlighted a reversal in poverty statistics. Once better off, Nigeria now has more people living in poverty than China, Vietnam, and Indonesia combined, despite having had fewer poor citizens than each of them in 1990.

He concluded by urging Nigerian leaders to focus on critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, if the country truly desires to progress.

“These countries succeeded because their political leaders prioritized human capital development. Nigeria must follow suit with leadership that has the vision and the will to invest in the people,” Obi added.
