Peter Obi Fires At ICPC: “Why Chase El-Rufai Like He’s On The Run

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the ongoing detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), describing it as political persecution.

Obi expressed his concerns on Sunday during a meeting with African Democratic Congress (ADC) stakeholders in Kaduna, emphasizing that the law mandates that individuals be treated with dignity until proven guilty.

“It is political persecution. Our laws ensure that people are treated with respect until they are found guilty. Let the law take its course. How do you invite someone who voluntarily returned to the country and then treat him as if he is fleeing? The law must guide this process,” Obi stated.

El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18, following his transfer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Department of State Services (DSS) has charged him with cybercrime, with a court hearing scheduled for April 23, 2026.

In response, the former governor has filed lawsuits against both the DSS and ICPC, alleging abuse of power and unlawful detention. Meanwhile, the ICPC maintains that his detention is necessary as investigations into alleged money laundering and abuse of office continue.
